 x
A magnificent tree. The plaque beneath the tree reads;

[The grandfather of all, this plains Cottonwood poplar is one of the oldest and largest of its kind in southern Alberta. This tree is recognized as a living legacy to the optimism and forethought of our pioneer ancestors, particularly William Harmon Fairfield, first superintendent of the Dominion Experimental Station, circa 1900. Travelling six miles to the river valley to harvest trees using horse and wagon is an effort applauded and appreciated by many generations] (Patterson, D., 2022)

This park, the trees and ornamental gardens, beautified the area around the house of the first superintendent of the Dominion Experimental Farm, Dr. W.H. Fairfield. The house and the gardens have been lost with time but the trees continue to honour Dr. Fairfield's contributions. A local historian, Alex Johnston, wrote that Dr. Fairfield "probably did more than any other person to transform the region from a treeless plain to its present state" (Friends of Fairfield Gardens brochure).
